After the wet cold winter and then the rapid growth when the soil warmed up, we now have some lawns which have got a little thick and would ideally be thinned out over the next couple of months whilst the weather is ideal.

If we don’t do this, we can end up with a lawn that consists of a flat layer of green on top of a thick mat which no light can penetrate. This mat then turns brown.

This is referred to as ‘false crowning’. In this case when you mow your lawn, you can end up taking off the top layer and be left with a layer of thick spongey brown.

We are now approaching the time of year when it is ideal to remove some of this thick layer through a process called scarifying.

This will allow the light through again, which helps the grass and the soil become more how we would like them.
