Very often we find that builders or landscapers do not have the requisite knowledge or expertise to properly carry out correct lawn construction. This can leave your property with a dead or very sparse, patchy lawn.
It is very common in these cases that the only solution is to replace the lawn entirely.
The first step is of course the deconstruction and removal of your old lawn should that be needed. After which there are a number of factors that will need to be considered and covered off before a lawn can be replaced.
Time of Year
Unlike many people think, a lawn cannot be laid or replaced at any time of year. Conditions need to be right and timing of grass seed germination is highly important in the process. Lawns replaced at the wrong time of year or under the wrong conditions are prone to further problems or the need to be replaced again.
We always recommend that in Essex lawns are replaced in late summer only. This is because grass seed naturally germinates in late summer, not spring as is often assumed.
The soil beneath a lawn is the single most important factor in its growth and success. It is our process to always begin with a soil test to ascertain the soil type under your lawn. This helps us determine whether we need to bring in topsoil or not.
The dryness of the soil and the location of the lawn will also tell us if irrigation is required. If it is, this has to be done at the construction stage, putting irrigation in later can seriously damage a lawn.
Only once new topsoil is laid, or the old surface soil has been broken up can the surface be prepared for the laying of the new lawn. The surface preparation is often best left to nature but can be accelerated manually if required. Once done, the replacement of your lawn is a relatively simple process.
