Managing Soil Banks

Managing Soil Banks
Here is an image of one of our most recent projects. We were asked to find a solution for a very muddy and steep bank on our client's property.
This is an image of the steep bank on which we have installed a "Jute" Membrane. This is made of a plant grown mainly in India and Asia which is very tough and provides a natural and carbon neutral method of stabilising the bank.
We have seeded the bank with a range of naturally occurring indigenous grasses which will grow through the membrane and provide a low maintenance but pleasing cover which will need strimming off only once a year.
We can still easily manage the weeds within this cover keeping it very tidy. The membrane will naturally decompose together with the pegs over the next two years. The advantage of using wild grasses over flowering plants is that we can manage the vigorous weeds such as nettles and docks which we know will growth rapidly, in two or three years time, we will have got on top of the control of these weeds and will be able to introduce more flowering species which will add much biodiversity.
If we need to, we can apply growth regulators to the bank to make sure that the grasses stay upright for the year meaning that the area will look nice through until Christmas.
