What is Japanese Knotweed and What Does it Do?

Japanese Knotweed is a robust plant which escaped cultivation in the late nineteenth century and became an aggressive urban and rural invader across Hertfordshire. Spreading rapidly and sprouting tall stems with wide leaves, it supresses all surrounding plant growth.

It can be exceptionally difficult to kill. This is due to the fact that it lays deep root systems (known as rhizomes) which sprout yearly re-growths.

The root systems can go as deep as three meters and be over seven meters across. Because of their strength they cause major damage to house foundations if they are close to buildings. On top of which they can severely effect drainage systems, patios, driveways and walls. Strong and fast-growing they work their way between any available cracks and widen them, breaking up the surface and foundation of almost any structure they encounter.

It also kills off other plants and trees around it as its aggressive growth and root systems overshadow and strangle those of others nearby.

Removing and Controlling Japanese Knotweed

Legally speaking, it is not illegal for you to have Japanese Knotweed on your property but you should be aware that it can become a legal issue if it is allowed to spread beyond your property into those of your neighbours.

Numerous methods exist for the eradication of Japanese Knotweed, some being more invasive than others, and once it has taken root it is very hard to destroy.

Herbicidal or chemical treatments are favourable as they are generally cheaper and less drastic as a method of control. Due to the hardiness of the plant these treatments still take some time to completely kill off the weed, up to five years in some cases. If the invasion is substantial or causing major damage, it is often the case that excavation is the most effective method. However, this can be costly and will still require the excavated area to be chemically treated to prevent regrowth.

Here at Perfect Ground Solutions we are Knotweed specialists, we will always start with an assessment of the scale of your problem before we suggest the most suitable solution. We do not offer knotweed removal ourselves, so we’ll refer you on to someone should that be the most appropriate method of control.

Our focus is always to provide the most effective method, the least invasive and the most cost-effective. Our experts know how to apply herbicide to ensure it is most potent at destroying the weed and not killing off other areas of your garden.
